Shaq on the new ball

In the newest issue of Time magazine, they ask Shaq 10 questions. On the issue of the new ball, his response is:

The ball is terrible. It's something we'll just have to get used to. Playing with the ball is like going to a gentlemen's club, seeing an exotic dancer and then going home and playing with a plastic blow-up doll. It's bad.

It doesn't seem to be online yet...will link to it when it is.

Miss Take

Have you ever made the mistake of taking advantage of the open bar at a party? Oh, no? Well, come see how I look and it will explain a lot. Perhaps the coffee lady putting a shot of espresso in my coffee would explain a bit as well. Oops.

September Fund anti-Bush commercial

Wow...this is a great political commercial. It doesn't seem to have drawn the national attention that some of the smear ads or the Michael J. Fox ad have raised, but I find it it be fantastic. Bravo!

YouTube - Borat -The first 4 minutes of his Movie

Dennis pointed out that the first 4 minutes of Borat were posted on YouTube. Now let's go back a couple of years. There was no YouTube. We didn't have 200+ startups focusing on video. If you sat down the marketing execs and asked them how much would they pay to get access to 1M impressions, watching the first 4 minutes of their movie, and use WOMMA to encourage their friends to see it by using comments, favorites, and syndication; how much would they expect to pay for such a service? Well, they have that service, and it is free to them. Go Borat...would be GREAT if more studios would do this...

Republican Ads

I did not see the Republican ads where they included terrorist messages and I was disappointed. I was not surprise; I was disappointed.

Participate @ SomArts

Molly and I went to Participate @ SomArts on Saturday night. Our friend Shizz dreamed it up with another friend while sitting in his living room on day. From the promotion:

pARTicipate draws a fun, eclectic crowd by featuring art and music (midtempo, funky, groovy- breaks) plus a project where people can get creative and benefit a local non-profit at the same time…a nice change of pace from the thump-thump of clubbing – tho we’ll still dim the lights and get down on the later side.

They also have an incredible exhibit going on through November 4th for the Day of the Dead Celebration. We were captivated by the art in this section of SomArts -- go check it out!

A better Halloween

I am concerned about safety for Halloween. I hope you are as well. Please follow some of Merlin's tips for a better Halloween.

5ives » Five Halloween safety tips

1. For large groups of trick-or-treaters, always set at least one child ablaze, ensuring enough light that other children won’t trip over uneven pavement.
2. Only separate shards of X-Acto blades from rodent poison once you get home; doing so in the dark will lead to inevitable mixups and tummyaches for youngsters with allergies.
3. If a home has its porch light off — but an expressionless face can be seen peering from a cellar window — consider limiting your child’s unattended visit with the resident to no more than four hours.
4. If a close-fitting mask causes your child to fall down a well, use fishing line and a paper clip to retrieve her goodie bag. Nobody likes wet candy.
5. Although children dressed as SS-Sturmbannführer Michael Lippert are not required to “pretend execute” children dressed as Ernst Röhm, many parents find this bit of theatricality kindles the spirit that makes Halloween such a delight.

Not A Videoblog, Just A Blog

I believe that the definitions of videoblog, podcast, and blog are a bit irrelevant. They are means to tell a story. It doesn't matter to me which you use, just make it appropriate for the story. Our technology will start catching up so that we can interact with it all the same: search, discovery, tagging, advertising, aggregation and location.

A VC: Not A Videoblog, Just A Blog:

Chris is right. I have no intention of turning this blog into a video blog, but photos and videos help tell the story, whatever story it is that I am telling.

Apple lost me

Since the burglary, I have been trying to decide what to place my Thinkpad with. I was definitely leaning towards a Mac for the first time in my life. Most everything that I do is web based, and even some of what I used to do in Office is now switching over to the web as well. I was ready to final make the switch.

However, reading after reading the love that Dave Winer, Doc Searls, and others have been getting from Apple, I couldn't risk it. This machine is my main box...the one that I build my company on. Could I afford to be without it for 7-10 days? Absolutely not. Do I know if it has been fixed for new computers? Nope. Not a word from Apple on the subject.

Sorry, Apple. I wanted to one of your army. Going back to a Thinkpad!

BASE jumping in Kuala Lumpur

I have said it before, and I will repeat it now...I want to be a BASE jumper. Andy...get me on the right track. I feel the need for a lot of adrenalin in my life right now.

Random Acts

There are few things I enjoy more than random acts. Well, let's clarify, random acts that are not violent or ill intending. Today was a perfect example...

IMG_7342

While in my apartment listening to music, getting my halloween costume together, and doing some reading, I was jarred with the sound of brass, sax and drums. Going down Valencia St. What the hell?

IMG_7307

I grabbed my camera to run out and discover the Brass Liberation Orchestra strutting down the street. Unfortunately, my batter died and I could only capture a few shots, but it definitely made my day. Thanks for the random act of entertainment!

Olbermann: the beginning of the end of America

When my frustration and fear collude to impede my ability to build an argument, Mr. Olberman rises to convey the strongest message to our President yet. Habeas Corpus is the most basic, most fundamental, most American of rights. And it is suspended at the choice of our President. I am not running for office. I am not a liberal hippie. I am an American citizen who fears the rights that we allow to slip away.

Walled Gardens Don't Benefit

In the blog Marketing Shift, co-registration and user signups are noted as practices that can increase revenue and speed the road to profitability.

Co-Registration Benefits Online Media:

As I've said before, sites like YouTube and ABC.com should require free registration to get basic demographic information that could be used to justify higher CPM. But also they could use co-registration during this process to introduce customers to partners that could greatly increase their revenue. I doubt that many people would stop using these free services because of a one-time registration process that requires filling out a form.

Walled gardens do nothing but inhibit the use and sharing of content. The easier it is to access and syndicate the content, the more people will use the content. YouTube made it simple to add, play, find, and share content. No walls. No registration. Anonymous (well...at least to the level of logs! ;). There are absolutely no barriers to entry.

In addition, "basic demographic information that could be used to justify higher CPM" generates absolutely horrific user data. Amazing that most of the sites I belong to see me as a 69 year old male employed in agriculture. what incentive do I have to give you accurate or real information? None. Bug Me Not is a pretty popular service for a reason...

I aggree that co-registration can be a profitable for media sites, but to require blanket registrations is a horrible route. Make it valuable for the user to enter their correct information, ala social networking sites like MySpace, Tribe, Friendster, etc. That information will be more accurate and provide greater targeting than walled gardens put inplace only for the sake of higher CPMs.

On Military Commisions Act

I honestly hope that we will someday be able to apologize to our children for the mess of a world that we are leaving them. Habeas Corpus is a foundation of our nation. Foundation. We are on shaky ground. Please let the first act of our new Congress be to overturn this. Please.

SFGate: World Views : Edward M. Gomez:

The provisions of Bush's new torture law mean that Americans have lost the key, constitutional right on which Anglo-American criminal law (and criminal-law procedures in true democracies in general) is founded; that's the basic right of an individual to know why he or she is being apprehended and detained. Now, technically, as in Stalin's Soviet Union, Hitler's Germany, Mao's China or Pol Pot's Cambodia, anyone labeled an 'enemy combatant' - again, by whom; by Bush? - can be whisked away and never heard from again. That kind of authority, in the hands of corrupt or untruthful politicians, may or may not be an effective tool in some kind of 'war on terror,' but it certainly can be a useful tool when it comes to silencing their opponents.

The Infamous Ghetto Indoor Pool

Ever read something on the tubes and know that you are meant to be friends with someone? Yeah...just had one of those moments.

The Infamous Ghetto Indoor Pool:

Jake insisted that we try it out anyway, so we did. It’s very bizarre to be floating comfortably along in the pool while staring at the ceiling fan.

IE Feed Reader

There is speculation that the feed reader built into IE 7 will quickly become the most used RSS aggregator. With that in mind, will the aggregator portion respond with a different user-agent than the web browser? If not, understanding our rss stats becomes just a little more difficult...

Halloween @ Compass Point

Last year, thanks to Gayle, I volunteered at Compass Point to photograph their Halloween party. There are few events that are more fun to photograph than a Halloween party for children. Even more rewarding, though, is the way the kids react when the camera is focused on them. To most people, an SLR with a big lens and external flash is a bit weird if not intimidating. These kids put on a show. It was fantastic. Needless to say, I am heading back this year to shoot again. They are looking for additional volunteers. If you are interested, shoot me an e-mail.

The PayPerPost Virus Spreads

Techcrunch » The PayPerPost Virus Spreads:

While we applaud the fact that ReviewMe requires disclosure and prohibits advertisers from requiring a positive post, we still think the very act of paying bloggers to write about a product is a very bad idea.

So if I understand this correctly, Mike is saying that an advertiser should never be able to pay a blogger to write a review. If so, how does he feel about PodTech? Don't advertisers pay to have them create podcasts and videocasts regarding their products? As far as I can see, that is the basis of the casts regarding Verizon, Sun, The Deal, Adobe, Intel, f5, SAP, Cadence, and more.

Content isn't King

Cory Doctorow may have gave one of the best definitions in a defining diference between Web1.0 and Web2.0...

Boing Boing: Disney exec: Piracy is just a business model:

Content isn't king. If I sent you to a desert island and gave you the choice of taking your friends or your movies, you'd choose your friends -- if you chose the movies, we'd call you a sociopath. Conversation is king. Content is just something to talk about.

Syndicating Video

An interesting thing has happend over the past year as flash video becomes closer to an agreed standard on the web: we still rely on the player provider by the host. For instance, in Yahoo video search, it will display media from around the web, not just on Yahoo's servers, however, it directs you back to the originating website for the play. Compare this with podcasting, where sites like Odeo and Podshow will play the mp3 on their site through their own, branded flash players.

The process of discovering and playing an flv through any player is fairly easy. What is it about video that has stopped groups from playing flv's through any player?

Olbermann Continues his Fight

Keith Olbermann expands from embodying Edward R. Murrow to incorporating John Stewart brillance into his examination of habeas corpus. Go Keith...

Crooks and Liars » Olbermann: “Why does habeas corpus hate America”:

So as you can see, even without habeas corpus, at least one tenth of the Bill of Rights, I guess that's the Bill of 'Right' now… remains virtually intact.

And we can rest easy knowing we will never, ever have to quarter soldiers in our homes… as long as the Third Amendment still stands strong.

Techdirt Insight Community

Welcome to the Techdirt Insight Community:

Companies can use the Techdirt Insight Community to get a confidential instant focus group of experts, who can give feedback, test ideas, review products, make strategy suggestions, help with purchasing decisions or any number of other services that require a dedicated group of experts. Also, Techdirt's in-house analyst team regularly engages expert bloggers for their thoughts on how major current events impact Techdirt customers.

I have a ton of respect for Techdirt -- from both their tech products to the insight that they provide on a daily basis. Their new venture, Insight Community, is an interesting twist that looks to get marketers and influencers meeting in a public forum. While I don't know everything about the program, I am interested to see if transparency AND a double blind environment can be created and fostered such that real opinions and insight can be generated consistently. Congrats Techdirt!

Google docs

From what it appears, you can create a document within Google Docs and then publish it directly to your blog. It can take the name of the doc as the title and then the text of your doc as the body. With the addition of collaboration tools, a pretty way to edit and publish very involved postings. A little disappointing that I am unable to include a spreadsheet within my doc...I look forward to that.

On that note, I really look forward to the day when I can incorporate multiple applications together to create business docs. To store images in Flickr, a spreadsheet, a doc and have them all work seamlessly together and update. On the foundation of collaboration and it is a solid combination. Christoph and I collaborated on simple spreadsheets -- that admittedly could have been done in a wiki -- but the real time nature just made it go faster. I look forward to that day!

Update: Nice...it keeps track of your post within your blog to allow you to update or delete the posting.

MySpace is *NOT* gray

apophenia: comScore misinterprets data: MySpace is *NOT* gray:

Read the ComScore press release. Completely. Read the details. They have found that the unique VISITORS have gotten older. This is _not_ the same thing as USERS. A year ago, most adults hadn't heard about MySpace. The moral panic has made it such that many US adults have now heard of it. This means that they _visit_ the site. Do they all have accounts? Probably not.

Danah boyd is the first person I have seen to challenge this report. And is the first person that I have heard of that actually read the report. Hmmmm...I'm no better! Time to read the report.

Another time lapse

I know that I seem fascinated by time lapse movies right now. Truth be told, I am. My mind is swirling with ideas for different movies and ways to stretch what is possible...

I used 1,702 pennies to make a portrait of Lincoln. Sorting the coins took about seven hours, and making the image took just under six.
